Getting to the Cayman Islands and Getting Around the Cayman Islands

Navigating your way to and around the Cayman Islands is straightforward, thanks to a variety of transportation options that cater to different travel styles and budgets.

Getting to the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are accessible primarily through air travel, as they are located in the western Caribbean Sea. Here are some details:

  • Airports: The main international gateway is Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in Grand Cayman. Smaller airports are also available on Cayman Brac (Charles Kirkconnell International Airport) and Little Cayman (Edward Bodden Airfield).

  • Airlines: Several airlines operate flights to Grand Cayman from various cities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Direct flights are often available from cities like Miami, New York, and London.

  • Connecting Flights: If you're heading to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman, you'll likely take a short connecting flight from Grand Cayman. Cayman Airways operates these routes frequently.

  • Cruise Ships: George Town is a popular port of call for Caribbean cruises, although this doesn’t allow as much time to explore the islands as flying in would.

Getting Around the Cayman Islands

Once you're in the Cayman Islands, there are several options for getting around:

  • Rental Cars: This is a popular option, especially for visitors who want the freedom to explore the islands at their own pace. Remember, driving is on the left side of the road.

  • Taxis: Taxis are readily available, particularly around the airport, hotels, and major attractions. They are a convenient but somewhat expensive way to get around.

  • Public Buses: Mini-buses operate along the main routes on Grand Cayman and are a budget-friendly option. However, they may not provide the level of convenience some travelers desire.

  • Bicycles and Scooters: In smaller areas or less congested parts of the island, bicycles and scooters can be a fun way to get around.

  • Boats/Ferries: Boats are often used for trips between the islands or for various water-based activities but are not generally used for day-to-day transportation.

  • Walking: In compact areas like George Town or along Seven Mile Beach, walking can be a convenient way to get around, but it’s less practical for exploring the island more broadly.
